Mark Gumble Director of Academic Services for Student-Athletes

Mark Gumble was hired at UCF in August, 2005 as the director of Academic Services for Student-Athletes. Gumble came to UCF after serving in a similar role at San Diego State University and Binghamton University.

Upon his arrival to UCF, Gumble established the Knight's Education Enhancement Program (KEEP); an academic mentoring program for all new and at-risk student-athletes. He also expanded the tutorial program at UCF within his first year of service. Each of these initiatives helped UCF student-athletes reach new levels of success in the classroom.

A school record 54% of UCF student-athletes earned a 3.0 GPA or better in the fall 2006 semester and UCF had the most (190) student-athletes named to the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll during the 2006-07 academic year.

Gumble graduated from Binghamton University in 1988 with a Bachelor's degree in English and earned a Master's degree in social science in 1993. As a student-athlete at Binghamton he was a three-time All-American wrestler and won a national championship.

Gumble was named head wrestling coach of his alma mater in 1988. In 1994, he created the education enhancement program for student-athletes at Binghamton and served as the director of that program until 1998.

Gumble worked at San Diego State University from 1998 through 2005 and served as director of Student-Athlete Academic Services for five of those years. Gumble was instrumental in increasing the graduation rates, number of scholar-athletes, and team GPA's during his years of providing leadership at SDSU.

He has been inducted into five halls of fame, including high school, college, NY wrestling coaches and NCAA Division III Wrestling coaches.

Gumble has been an active member of the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletes for more than 10 years and has been a facilitator at the NCAA Leadership Conference on three different occasions.


Kristy Belden Assistant Director, Football, Men's and Women's Golf

Kristy Belden is the lead advisor for the football and men's and women's golf programs, as well as Assistant Director of Academic Services for Student-Athletes in the SABRE Center at UCF.

She was honored with the 2007 NACADA Outstanding Advising Certificate of Merit and 2006 UCF Excellence in Professional Academic Advising Award. Shareff Rashad, the 2007 UCF Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year awarded Belden with the Scholar-Athlete Inspiration Award. During Belden's time at UCF, the Football program has been honored with the 2005 UCF Most Improved Academic Award. In addition to academic advising, Belden has assisted with the CHAMPS/Life Skills program and is an adjunct instructor with the College of Education, where she teaches SLS 1501, a student life skills course for student-athletes.

She received Bachelor's degree in psychology from St. John's University (N.Y.). There she was a member of the track and field team, competing in the sprint events.

Belden received a Master's degree in educational psychology-sport psychology from Florida State University, where she researched perfectionism and procrastination tendencies among collegiate student-athletes. During that time, she also spent two years working as an assistant academic counselor in FSU's athletic academic support department and as a sport psychology consultant for FSU's men's and women's swim program.


Sarah Hill Assistant Director, Women's Basketball, Women's Soccer, Spirit

Sarah Hill is an Assistant Director in Academic Services for Student-Athletes and has been working at UCF since Fall of 2000. She began her career in ASSA as an assistant advisor with the football program. She then became the advisor for the men's basketball program, working with them for five years. She is currently working with women's basketball, women's soccer and the spirit team.

Sarah is a graduate of the 2005-2006 Leadership Enhancement Program and an active member of N4A (National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics) for over 6 years, a member of NACADA (National Academic Advising Association), and NACWAA (National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators).

Sarah has earned four Golden Apple Inspiration awards from her student-athletes throughout her tenure at UCF. She also serves as an adjunct instructor with the College of Education, teaching SLS 1501 to incoming students.

She received her Bachelor of Arts in sociology from Arkansas State University. During this time she was a member of the track and field team competing in the long and triple jump. After graduation, she took the position as the Assistant Coach of both the men and women's track and field teams at her alma mater. While there, she helped lead three (indoor and outdoor) Men's Conference Championships and one Women's Conference Championship and also helped coach two female NCAA All-Americans in the field events. Sarah also received her Master of Arts degree in sociology at Arkansas State University. While obtaining her degree, she volunteered in the athletics department assisting the academic advisors with scheduling of courses, tutoring, coordinating study halls, and also worked in the Sociology/Criminology Department as a graduate assistant, assisting several professors.

Originally from San Jose, California, she enjoys traveling, spending time with family, and attending church.


Jennifer Alger Academic Advisor, Baseball, Softball, Volleyball

Jennifer Alger has been with Academic Services for Student-Athletes since January 2004. She is currently the lead advisor for baseball, softball, and volleyball. In addition to advising, Jennifer is the liaison with UCF Orientation Services as well as the event coordinator for ASSA. She began her career with ASSA as an assistant academic advisor for the football team while earning her MBA and Master's degree in sports business management from the DeVos Sports Business Management Program at UCF.

During the 2006-2007 academic year, the baseball team achieved a record high 3.01 cumulative team GPA under Jennifer's direction. Sixty-one of her student-athletes were honored as Scholar-Athletes in the fall and forty-seven received honors in the spring. This year also saw the continued improvement and success of ASSA's special events including Knights' Herald, three graduation luncheons, and the Annual Scholar and Service Awards Program which honored over 350 student-athletes.

Jennifer is a member of the National Association of Athletic Academic Advisors (N4A) and has presented at the national level for the past two years. In addition, she works together with UCF's College of Education as an adjunct professor in Strategies for Success in College (SLS 1501).

Jennifer received her Bachelor of Science degree in marketing from St. John's University (NY). While at St. John's, Alger was a member of the swim team, competing in the individual medley and distance freestyle events. After graduation, she worked for Drug Free America Foundation in St. Petersburg, FL as a research specialist, aiding in the development of projects geared toward drug awareness and prevention.


Tim Anderson Academic Advisor, Men's Basketball, Rowing

Tim Anderson joined the Academic Services for Student Athletes staff as an academic advisor in September 2006. Anderson currently coordinates the academic support programs for men's basketball and women's rowing. In addition to his advising duties, he also coordinates the services for the SABRE computer lab as well as the department's website.

Anderson previously worked with the football and men's golf programs at UCF overseeing continued success that led to the men's golf team sporting the highest team GPA for a men's athletic program and a football squad that put 77 student-athletes on the honor roll this past fall/spring. The women's rowing team holds currently holds UCF's highest team cumulative GPA with a 3.27.

Anderson is also an instructor adjunct with the College of Education teaching Strategies for Success in College (SLS 1501) and is a member of the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics.

A native of Iowa, Anderson previously served as an academic coordinator for athletics at Colorado State University. He also worked as an academic advisor to the football program at the University of Tennessee while earning a Master's of Science degree in sport management. Anderson holds a Bachelor's of Science degree from the University of Nebraska-Omaha where he was a member of the football program as a student-athlete and student-assistant coach.


Val Brown Academic Advisor, Football, Men's and Women's Tennis

Valeria Brown joined the Academic Services for Student Athletes staff as a full-time academic advisor for football and the men's and women's tennis teams in May 2007.

Brown began her career with ASSA as a graduate assistant for football while earning her second Master's degree in Educational Leadership at the University of Central Florida.

Prior to moving to Orlando, Brown worked as a high school English and journalism teacher in Delray Beach, FL, where she also served as the yearbook advisor and varsity cheerleading coach.

A native of Miami, FL, Brown received her Bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Florida, and her first Master's degree in multicultural education from Florida Atlantic University.


Corrie Scott Coordinator of Academic Support Services, Academic Advisor,
                                          Men's and Women's Track and Cross Country, Men's Soccer

Corrie Scott is the Coordinator of Academic Support Services for Academic Services for Student-Athletes. Going into her second year, her responsibilities include overseeing academic advising for the men's soccer, women's track and field and cross country, and men's cross country teams as well as coordinating the mentor and tutoring program.

With her at the helm, the 2006-2007 academic year saw marked improvement for the men's soccer team as they rose from a 2.76 to a 3.007 team cumulative GPA. Forty-eight of her student-athletes were honored as Scholar-Athletes in the fall semester and forty-five were honored during in the spring semester. This year also saw the continued growth of the tutoring and mentoring programs under her direction.

Corrie is a member of two national organizations: National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) and National Association of Athletic Academic Advisors (N4A). She has also worked in conjunction with the SOAR program at UCF to teach as an adjust professor in Strategies for Success in College (SLS 1501).

Prior to joining the ASSA staff, Scott spent two years at the University of Kentucky's Center for Academic and Tutorial Services, where she worked with the Wildcat football team, assisted in coordinating the mentor and tutoring program and worked with at-risk student-athletes.

A native of Kentucky, Scott received both her Bachelor's degree in psychology and her Master's degree in higher education administration from UK.

Tina Davia was hired in 2005 as Office Manager for Academic-Services for Student Athletes. Previously she was employed at UCF in the Human Resources and Biology Departments on campus. Davia holds Bachelor's degrees in Communications and Political Science from Loyola University in Chicago, IL. She attended graduate school at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
